Who Participates in an Airport Master Plan?

Project Updates

October 16, 2025

Kicking off in November 2025, the Reno-Stead Airport (RTS) Master Plan process will take approximately 24 months to complete. The Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority, owner and operator of RTS, has already established its project team, including lead planning and engineering firm Ardurra and a broad range of aviation, environmental and architectural partners. The project team will guide the airport master plan update process, gathering information, analyzing data and developing the plan that the stakeholders ultimately select. The team has already begun collecting information on the airport’s history, existing conditions and airport users.

The Reno-Stead Airport is large—more than 5,000 acres—and a comprehensive analysis needs to happen to ensure that the land is utilized to the best and highest degree possible. It may mean adapting the airport to accommodate new technologies in support of the region’s growing aerospace business ecosystem. It may mean expanded efforts to support the airport’s general aviation tenants. There are many different ways to envision the future of RTS, and there are several individuals and organizations that will help the project team find the best solution.

The Airport Authority has established a Master Plan Working Group (MPWG) to support the master planning process. This group is a coalition of organizations that includes airport tenants; city, state and federal officials; regional transportation agencies; and airport neighbors living in nearby ZIP codes 89506 and 89508. The MPWG will represent the public and the many agencies that work with and may be affected by the airport, and will serve an important role in developing the RTS Master Plan.

You will also play a role in the master planning process. There will be several public meetings and events over the course of the next two years, all designed to solicit your feedback about the future of RTS. We also have a comment form that allows you to share your thoughts or questions directly with the project team, and be part of the official project record.
